Tierra Institute International offers a marine program in collaboration with Aula de Ciencia TEFOVEA, based and developed in the islands of Ibiza, with some occasional trips to Formentera. The program aims to a deeper understanding of the environment, and the ecosystem functioning and management of coastal and marine areas. The courses are offered to students and/or individuals with other qualifications related to knowledge of the environment. Courses can be validated with credits at their universities and will be held between October and May and always include a theoretical part and one or more, field trips. Those wishing to participate can obtain more information about courses that are of interest to them with specific dates, detailed course syllabus and other relevant data.
Theoretical output field. This course is intended to be an introductory course to ornithology. The course teaches students to recognize the characteristics that define groups of birds, and classify them according to their diet, habitat, etc. Observation exercises, auditory and species identification will be conducted on the field trip at the Natural Park of Salinas, and materials for tracking activity such as field guides, binoculars and laminated sheets for easy identification will be provided.
Introductory course to Mediterranean Coastal Ecology Study of the different constituent elements and their role within the ecosystem with special focus on the dunes and Posidonia meadows. The course will include a part on coastal management.
Mediterranean Biodiversity and Taxonomy
This course is intended to obtain the knowledge of some of the species that can be found in the Mediterranean, their name and classification, how to recognize them, what information can we extract from their observation and their role within the ecosystem. The course will also provide information on how to handle species identification guides, which websites are the most recommended for consultation, as well as literature of interest. The practical part will be held in the classroom and will consist of identification exercises and classification of samples.
Study of Cetaceans
A training activity starting with an introductory course to biology and ecology of cetaceans in general, with special focus on the species present in the Mediterranean, and how to act in different cases of possible interaction with them. As a follow up, several courses will be offered on specific aspects such as bioacoustics, photo-identification and retrieval of cetaceans.
The Mediterranean forest, characteristics and uses. A course that brings us to the botanical theory in a practical setting which explains the characteristics of the Mediterranean forest, as it affects the weather and proximity to the sea in different environments, endemic species present, effects and adaptations to fires, and use of forests in popular culture and today. During the field experience, participants will learn to identify and interpret some plant species and landscape.
Qualified diving participants with diving insurance and valid medical certificate, will be able to benefit of a diving experience and subsequent interpretation of the environment and the species observed through an associated scuba diving center in the island.
