Guatemala

Tierra Solar Program in Guatemala is conducted in cooperation with a local community based organization in the department of Quiche. The program is being implemented in several phases and it provides solar energy applications to individual and public buildings of rural communities without access to electricity. The program is being implemented one municipality at a time of the five that are being targeted through 2020.

Initial contacts were established in 2008 after an assessment visit to the area by Tierra staff. The first one week solar training and installation session was completed in 2011 in the communities of Aguilix (Municipality of San Andres) and Panimache (Municipality of Santa Cruz del Quiche) to provide solar illumination for a house, a school, and a solar water pump for the community.

During the next two years, local Tierra trained technicians, monitored the performance of the systems, and they installed solar systems for illumination for 10 additional houses.

In December 2013, Tierra staff conducted a second two day training/installation session to provide illumination for the school of the community of Aguilix. All 23 participants members of the community who send their children to the school, received a Tierra solar lantern kit to be used at home.

A third solar training/installation for another school in the community of Cuillon is planned for 2014.
